How to rule out problems with the MS Outlook Client in case of a conflicting Antivirus software

I have a mini desktop Windows pc that I regularly use to access my Outlook mails and other similar tasks. It seemed to be working fine and had no problems till I installed the Kaspersky antivirus program. Whenever I opened MS Outlook after that, it flashed the following error message on the screen:

‘Unable to display the folder. The file c:\documents and settings\Owner\LocalSettings\ Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst could not be accessed. Data error (cyclic redundancy check).’

At other times, I used to get another message that the Kaspersky process has caused a serious problem within Outlook. I already tried a ‘chkdsk’ scan followed by a .pst repair, but with no success. It looked as if the Kaspersky program had made changes to the Outlook data file and rendered it inaccessible. I had read a lot on the problems related with Kaspersky and Outlook in the past. Never really thought it would end up this way and mess up all my Outlook mailboxes. Also, I did not have any recent backup to make up for the loss. It was too late to realize its importance.

I already tried with the Inbox Repair tool. Surprisingly, it gives an error asking me to run Scandisk. I did exactly the same and also ran ‘chkdsk’ on my XP SP2 system. Still the same problems showed up again. With the help of repair utility, I was able to collect emails before a specific date. This was the time when an auto-update happened on Kaspersky. I was able to recover my emails before that date. Moreover, I used the ‘Create Distribution List’ function of Outlook to access the contacts. I had turned off the spam protection in Kaspersky by now. I removed Kaspersky from the tray and again ended up with the same error:

‘Unexpected error occurred. Use Scandisk to check disk and run the tool again’

After all these tries, I went to an expert for a workaround to this problem. He gave a suggestion to use third-party Outlook PST repair software. After trying a range of utilities, I found out a reliable tool ‘Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair’. This tool worked just fine to repair the corrupt Outlook PST and recover all lost contacts, emails, calendar entries, journal, etc. It helped me to check the emails prior to actual recovery and allowed me to select the ones that I wanted to recover. Additionally, this software is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, Server 2003, XP, and 2000.

Problems faced while moving PST file of Office SB 2007 MLK to the new system with Office Pro 2007 Retail

Everything was working like normal on my two Dell PCs with Windows XP pro installed on both. I was using Office SB 2007 MLK on my older PC and Office Pro 2007 Retail on the new one. It seemed as if something had gone wrong with the PST file. Recently, I had formatted my new system and wished to transfer the personal folders (PST) file from the old system to the new one. I have tried this a couple of times but with no success. When asked to verify it using the PST check program, I followed exactly the same fearing a possible corrupt pst file which will ultimately led to go for Outlook pst recovery for a proper solution for my problem.

The program took a long time before finally declaring that my PST was corrupt. I tried this time using the File Transfer program from Windows, but was surprised to see the same thing again. I again formatted the hard disk on my new computer and installed Office SB 2007 MLK. Again copied the file, but only to learn that the file was corrupt. I continued with this practice for several days. When the PST file was copied to the older PC, no problems were there. Also did a simple import and copy/paste, but no improvement was seen.

I had thought of HDD cloning earlier, now decided to give it a go. Yes, I was able to use the PST file on my new system and everything worked well. However, as I wanted to have a fresh XPS installation, this wasn't something I was looking for. There were dozens of applications and files on the hard disk that were practically useless to me. The question was why all my attempts to move PST to the same Outlook version failed. I tried a direct copy, Windows Files Transfer method, also compressed and then copied to an external media. But each of these methods failed.

The idea was lurking in my mind that my PST was oversized. There were other uncertainties as well, but this was probably the whole underlying problem. I noticed that my PST had grown to around 16 GB. Generally, a PST file would show erratic behavior after reaching the size limit of 3-4 GB. I was apprehensive of losing my emails and other data in the file. I decided to use PST recovery software. It did help me to overcome this problem and conveniently recover almost everything, including emails, attachments, calendar items, notes, journals, etc. Finally, I safely copied everything to an external HDD.
